Pulp magazines were published from the late 1890s to the 1950s. They derived their name from the cheap wood pulp paper they were printed on. Most covers were painted and often showcased a damsel in distress or horrific images that were later not allowed. On the insides though and in almost all cases, the pulps were all written short stories – unlike comics which included images to go along with the stories. At the height of the industry the most popular Pulps were selling around a million copies every issue. By the 1940's the the market had shifted and the short stories led to the popularity of comic books and other novels.
Pulps were mostly made up of Science Fiction, Detective/Mystery, Western, Romance, Sports, Erotic and early Super-Hero stories. Some of the titles and characters even carried over to comic books themselves like the Shadow or Flash Gordon.
Due to their age, size and material Pulps are often found in low grade. Don't let that discourage you, they can still be worth a pretty penny!
